This might sound like a silly comment, but I’ve recently had the revelation that one must work out as one gets older.
Let me explain:
(as if you didn’t think I was going to take a whole blog post to explain something as mundane and obvious as the idea that you actually, you know, have to work at keeping your body healthy)
I know it might sound strange to some people, but it just didn’t make sense to me that one should be required to work out.
Oh, let me define “work out” real quick.
You see, I’ve known people who were die hard work-out-aholics. They were the bros who went to the gym to pump iron and get swol… except when I was younger it was called getting buff, or, just… working out. There’s your typical bicep curls, squats, and of course the bench press.
By the way, if you’re ever going to boast about your weight lifting prowess, remember that bar on which the weights slide is already like 45 pounds. A small child might be anywhere from 30 to 60 pounds, and a teenager who just hit puberty is probably already pushing 100 pounds and I don’t know why he’s still so skinny even though he eats literally all the time.
Anywho
I’ve always thought being buff, or swol, or a real life Hulk was just stupid. Not to mention how unhealthy it seemed. Not the “working out” part, but the protein shakes, powders, and bars, along with the idea that lifting weights and having big muscles somehow makes you healthy. You need to work out the cardiovascular system as well, and you can’t do that lifting weights. You have to go walking or running.
Or you can take an aerobics class.
My mom teaches aerobics, so I know what I’m talking about.
Also, Bing how to lose weight and the suggestions from all the real articles not trying to sell you magic exotic fruits or super pills will be (A.) eat less fatty foods and (B.) do aerobic exercise. So, don’t just take my mom’s word for it. The INTERNET said it, so you know it’s true.
Side note: some kid in like the 7th grade asked me how to spell “aerobic” and when I said “I don’t know” she was puzzled because my mom teaches aerobics, so I should know how to spell it…
I’ve always known about exercise and how it’s good for your health. Quite honestly, I think any misconceptions I’ve had about exercise comes from adults. Look at all the kids you know. They probably have recess and P.E. at school, play a sport, dance, take an American Ninja Warrior class, or else they’re just fat and lazy sitting on the couch all day long eating Doritos and drinking Mt. Dew. Not to stereotype anyone, but c’mon… that’s what most gamers do.
😉
Living most of my life playing sports, running around outside, camping and hiking, going on bike rides, and in general just being fit because I did so much activity, I never thought that one day I would have to be active ON PURPOSE. And for my part, I began walking about a year ago… that is, I’ve been taking walks for about a year. Actually, it’s more like 2 years, but on and off. When I was in Florida, and jobless, I walked every day for many hours. When I came back I walked all over town. But then winter happened. And it’s cold in winter, so… two plus two.
Back to “working out”
I don’t think that’s enough. I don’t exactly lift heavy boxes over my head for a living, so I’m not doing much to strengthen my muscles. And quite honestly I spend so much time doing useless things like watching movies and hanging out on the Internet, I’m probably not strengthening my head muscle either. That’s the conclusion I’ve come to recently. I don’t need to get swol, I just need to be able to pick things up that weigh, like, any amount of pounds. I need my muscles to be able to support my own weight. I need to stay fit in all areas. Saying, “I walk all over town so I’m totally healthy” is not something I’ve said, but I may have been thinking it without thinking about it.
So, It’s time to realize that I do actually NEED to work out. I need to keep my muscles strong, my brain sharp, and my heart pumping with out screaming, “Good gravy why are we going so fast!”

P.S. – you need to work out too. Just to keep in shape, and be ready for the zombie apocalypse.
P.P.S – gamers don’t JUST eat Doritos and drink Mt. Dew. That was a joke. I’m sorry. I need you guys to defend me from the zombies. I hear you’re good at that.
